I mean go ahead and use the words for a child because many of us didn’t learn this as a child.

I’m a PreK teacher. My therapist has used the term “big feelings” with me. 10/10 recommend with those of us who work with tiny humans.

Obviously people can feel however they do, but I think “big feelings” is actually an excellent term for feelings that are incredibly activating/ elevated regardless of the type of feeling. It’s completely acceptable short hand for all ages.

I actually like “big feelings.” It makes the feelings seem easier to access. Everyone knows their own version of big feelings, but they may not have the same understanding of what it means to have emotional dysregulation.

You know, my ex and I took our child to therapy, my kid was about 11. Therapist wanted us in there for the first session to describe our goals to her. My ex said “I want our child to learn how to handle or remove the BAD feelings” I corrected him and said no feelings are bad, some are just hard or really big” plenty of adults learned that mad and sad = bad/moral failing. They also need to learn that they are just BIG. Lol

First off, you don’t owe an apology because of saying someone “big feelings” bothers someone that is a them issue not a you issue. Because many adults struggle with big feelings. And if is not condescending.

I don’t think it’s fair. We literally have a little self inside of ourselves (especially those of us healing) and we need to reparent ourselves. I think the fact that that rubbed them that way is good info for them to know what work they may need to do.

Sure, it can be said in an infantilizing way, but as a middle aged adult mostly I think it’s helpful. Sometimes being offended by “childish” language can be a reflection of the way our culture doesn’t treat children as humans. (See also, “When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.”)

maybe I'm watching too much Miss Rachel too... because I have looked at my husband and told him I have big feelings! it's a way of naming the feelings without having the name of the feeling!

I dunno - when I hear a younger parent use those terms I immediately lock in and think yeah I’d understand. To me it’s almost become Office cooler, slang.

I think the bigger question is why would someone get offended at something that even if it is normally said to a child, why would someone get so darn upset about it? it's literally just a word big feeling and it's true. even adults can have really big feelings. what's another way of saying saying that for adults I literally see adults throw temper tantrums All the time can't adult throw temper tantrums?
