@samvizthesciencewiz: Starlink put internet in places that never had a cable, and it works because the satellites fly low. Low is also where the air still drags, so all 11,000 are slowly falling and one or two burn up every day. What’s left is a fine aluminum dust that takes decades to reach the ozone layer. Nobody’s sure yet what it does there. #starlink #physics #ozone #orbit #Space
For the information of everyone here:
We actually have about 360tons of aluminium oxide entering the atmosphere yearly.
And yes aluminium oxide does erode the ozone layer, but do you know what else erodes the ozone layer? Nitrous oxide!!
Where does nitrous oxide come from? - you may ask, well the largest source we currently have is actually cattle.
That said to equal 360tons of aluminium oxide we would need to add ~1050tons of nitrous oxide, or the equivelant to a little over 1 million cows.
That might seem like alot but we kill about 900k cows daily, so we hurt the ozone layer every 2 days from cow meat alone than all of the earth's sattelites together do in a year!
Please keep yourself informed and don't blindly trust attention seekers on the internet, if anybody thinks that I am wrong and provides evidence of such I will apologise and promptly delete my comment!

Ts should be illegal. If they can’t do it without polluting the atmosphere then they shouldn’t be allowed to

While yes this is a concern, natural processes such as meteors and asteroid impacts deliver way more material straight into the upper atmosphere at around 4-6000 tons per year. The largest concern for the ozone layer and climate is large companies that have an incentive to emit as much co2 and toxic gases as they can while they still can.

So long as those externalized mitigation costs are passed on to Starlink. Oh wait. Of course they’re not.

it's law btw that EVERY satellite in earth's orbit has to naturally come down without human intervention in a few years. Because what would happen if you lose control of it and it doesn't come down? suddenly orbit is full of even more junk
