You can see a gust of dust stir up as he reaches the tree. I’m pretty sure those were the nano bots. They aren’t grey like the cloud that charlotte saw because those bots were using camouflage to look like the clouds. The nano bots that killed Bernard were supposed to look like dust.

I rewatched the episode and I noticed Bernard jolt suddenly as he gets near the tree. So I’m definitely leaning towards nanobot gas in the atmosphere is a safeguard and I definitely think that’s what happened to the citizens of Silo 17.

there's definitely more than one way to kill whoever gets out the question isn't how they are killing them it's why why are they trying soo hard to keep them inside if the outside is actually safe

Theory: I think the gas they spray on the suits is the safe guard (idk if it’s the nanobots or not), but that’s what got him. Like in 17, that’s why the bodies from are scattered that way. They were hit by the gas as the rushed out.

I’ve never really subscribed to the poison gas in the chamber before they go outside theory BUT I’m not totally against it. I’m only halfway through the book Shift so I don’t even know based on the books.

I don't think the nanite get in the air tank on their suit. the nanites eat away at the suit tape. solo mentioned a storm that killed his silo. because if the gas was in the oxygen inside the suit juls wouldn't have survived the 1st time. right? I think the drones are a last resort safeguard. and since they discovered the tape they had to resort to drones. just a theory.
