Sometimes the reason someone keeps treating you the same way is because nothing changes when they do. They disrespect you. You forgive them. They cross the boundary. You move it. They hurt you. You explain why it hurt, accept the apology, and give them another chance. And eventually, without even realizing it, you teach them that they can continue the behavior and still have the same access to you. Your time. Your energy. Your attention. Your presence. Your forgiveness. Boundaries are not just telling someone what you won’t tolerate. They are deciding what you will do when that line is crossed. Because a boundary without a consequence eventually becomes a suggestion. And consequences don’t have to mean revenge. They don’t have to mean yelling, fighting, or trying to hurt someone back. Sometimes the consequence is simply less access to you. You stop answering every call. You stop fixing what they keep breaking. You stop making excuses for them. You stop having the same conversation over and over again. And sometimes, you walk away completely. That doesn’t make you cruel. It means you finally understand that protecting your peace sometimes requires allowing people to experience what life feels like without unlimited access to you. You can love someone and still have boundaries. You can forgive someone and still decide the relationship needs to change. You can understand why someone behaves the way they do without continuing to accept the behavior. Because when someone repeatedly hurts you and nothing changes afterward, there is very little reason for them to change. At some point, you have to stop asking them to respect the boundary and start respecting it yourself. You are not responsible for teaching someone how to treat people. But you are responsible for deciding what happens when they continue treating you poorly. 💚
