I'm confused. If we don't build data centres in our country do people think they don't get built anywhere? No, they'll just get built in poor low regulation countries even though they have less water and renewable energy. Scotland has some of the best access to rainwater and renewable energy in the world: we should set high standards for them, tax them and then build loads of them here.

Where are you getting these numbers? 20% of global energy use? It's growing but currently nearer 2%. And water use is a big scary number but dwarfed by golf course consumption. I could offset my annual AI use by not driving to work tomorrow and swapping my burger for a salad once this year. There are legitimate reasons to be cautious over AI disruption but water and energy are dead ends.

heat pumps are bringing down our energy costs not increasing them. our electricity cost is set by the most expensive source which is generation from gas dictated by the price of gas, the electricity a heat pump uses requires 1/3 of the gas to produce that heating the same house directly with gas would require so reduces our gas demand by 2/3.

your one of the most misleading leftist creators on this platform. energy consumption is a good thing when companies are free to build more infrastructure and could lead to energy being cheaper, you fail to mention that most new data centres are built closed loop and dont use much water which wouldn’t be an issue anyway if they arent built in a stressed area, noise can be prevented if regulated. the other points are nothing burgers you could say about any new technology that will come with phasing out fossil fuels.
