@dinalynee: If you've ever been told to "just stop" pulling or picking, this one's for you. New research out of Yale this year found hair pulling and skin picking carry inherited genetic risk, and even share genetic risk with OCD. Translation: this was never weak willpower or bad parenting. It's a real, biological, body focused repetitive behavior, and it's about as common as OCD. You were never the problem. Questions about pulling or picking? Drop them below, I read them.

I’ve been skin picking my entire life. It makes me so incredibly self conscious. Like you said, I don’t even realize I’m doing it most of the time. It gets worse when I’m anxious or stressed. I’ve improved since being on an SSRI with help with my OCD and ruminating thoughts, but I don’t think it will ever go away entirely.

My entire family does picking/ pulling. I have pretty bad OCD, but my one kid pulls her eyelashes out as a stim but my other kid picks her skin open from anxiety

getting acrylic nails was the thing that stopped me. The moment they come off and its easy to feel again, right back at it

I have found it literally painful to try to stop myself from picking - and it's not just on myself, I do it to my cats too. I'm so worried I'm going to cause one of us an infection and sometimes I feel like I just need to bind my hands.

100%. I had my husband give me a gentle reminder every time he noticed me picking at my scalp - it took time but I no longer subconsciously do it! Taking up hobbies like knitting also helped to give me something else for my fidgety hands to do. I can now catch it myself and take a breath and recognize my immediate anxiety that caused it in the 1st place and work on calming down.
