@lizasamuellcsw: I am a trauma therapist. And here is the question I ask new clients that usually leaves them completely silent: “What did you have to become in order to survive your environment?” Not, “What’s wrong with you?” Not, “Why are you like this?” Because so many symptoms make sense once people stop viewing themselves through shame and start viewing themselves through adaptation. The people pleasing. The hyper independence. The anxiety. The perfectionism. The emotional shutdown. The constant need to stay useful or in control. A lot of people are not broken. They are patterned. And sometimes one question changes the entire way a person understands themselves. What would you add to this?

Trying to become invisible. If I’m not noticed, I can’t get hurt…

I ask my clients “After we go through months or years of sessions and growth happens for you, who do you want to be at the end of it all?

I had to gradually erase my feelings; I had to learn to disallow any dysregulated responses; I had to assume that no family member would empathise or care about my POV; I had to recognise that I was not wanted anymore and be ok with that. I also had to recognise that the occasional baiting, hoover attempt, breadcrumbing or guilt tripping would occur but I had to learn that that contact was only occurring to make themselves feel better about hurting me and was not coming from a perspective that they were ever interested in my feelings. I had to learn that I had been deleted but also that I hadn’t ever really existed in the first place. That I had always been resented and unwanted by my family. I have had to be ok with that. It’s taken me a long time. I only existed as a repository for blame, guilt, dysfunction and anger. I’m shunned but also central to a narrative which is both absurd and nothing to do with me. I’m rewritten but no one knew me anyway. I’m lied about and smeared but no one is really listening either way. I’m only missed for the function I might provide not for the human I ever was. I’ve been a target, a mirror, a receptacle, a myth, a symbol and a scorecard. None of it makes any sense to me. In the lynch mob, maybe it does to them. But no one is listening either way. No one speaks anymore and the myth has taken over all critical thinking, humanity and common decency.

I had to become a version of myself I do not recognize - angry, suspicious, guarded, closed off, people pleasing to "keep the peace", resentful.

The only way I could have answered that initially would have been to say I had to become me.... I didn't even understand the difference as it was all my "normal"

I had to kill parts of myself to survive. The planner. The organizer. The future thinker. Those weren’t allowed to survive. And 4 years later, I’m chronically late to everything. Extremely unorganized and I feel like a shadow or shell of the person who I used to be. And I don’t know how to revive those parts of me. Or if I even can

Emotionally detached. In every sense of the words. Not the "fun edgy" way. Not the "Elena Gilbert turn it off" way. The "I'm so far gone it's ruining my life" way.
