There is no need for specification because we speak in full sentences. When you say "Mein Freund" it is your boyfriend. When you say "Ein Freund" it is a friend. The german grammar does not need an extra word for this, so we never "invented" one.

The words are Freund & Freundin...they mean both friends (male, female respectively) and boyfriend/ girlfriend. the difference is the possessive pronoun...if you use ein/eine its a platonic friend. if you use mein/meine that designates boyfriend/girlfriend. you also just call them your schatz(treasure, term of endearment) or schatzchen (same thing but the Chen means little & is a further term of endearment).
