My Journey My name is Gerard Butler, and my journey began in Paisley, Scotland, on November 13, 1969. Looking back now, my life has taken me places I could never have imagined when I was a young boy. I grew up in Scotland with my family, and from an early age I learned that life would not always follow the path I expected. I eventually went to the University of Glasgow, where I studied law. For a while, I believed that becoming a lawyer would be my future. But there was always another part of me that wanted to perform. I loved acting, theatre and telling stories. Eventually, I had to make a difficult decision: continue with the career I had planned, or take a chance on the dream that had been quietly growing inside me. I chose acting. It wasn't an easy road. I started with smaller roles and had to work hard to prove myself. I appeared in films such as Mrs Brown and Tomorrow Never Dies, and little by little, opportunities began to come my way. One of the moments that changed my career was playing the Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera. But my life changed dramatically when I was given the role of King Leonidas in 300. Playing Leonidas demanded everything from me physically and emotionally. The film became a huge success, and suddenly people all around the world knew my name. What had once seemed like an uncertain dream had become a reality. Since then, I've had the opportunity to play many different kinds of characters — from action heroes to romantic leads and dramatic characters. Films such as P.S. I Love You, Law Abiding Citizen, Olympus Has Fallen, Greenland, Plane, and the Den of Thieves films have each given me something different. But beyond the movies, what means the most to me is the journey itself. I've experienced successes, disappointments, difficult moments and moments that made me incredibly proud. I've learned that life doesn't always happen according to the plan you make when you're young. Sometimes you have to take a risk, start again and believe in yourself even when you don't know where the road will lead. When I look back at the young man from Scotland who once thought he would become a lawyer, I'm grateful that he had the courage to change direction. My story is still being written, and I'm thankful for every person who has been part of that journey.
