We’re tipping wait staff because they (somehow) legally make less than minimum wage from their employer. If they’re behind a counter taking your order, there’s a chance they’re making twice the federal minimum these days. I think you can let that go guilt-free. They pretty much are trying to sucker you into giving the shop more money without saying anything to you directly, as far as I can tell.

Tip when you sit down for food or drink. But when you tip for anything else you are just helping the restaurant not pay them. Restaurants pay below wage and expect tips to make their wage. If they don’t make wage then restaurants have to pay them a wage. Thats why cash tips were always best. I was suckered for a bit, but now I no tip unless I sit down.

Yes, it's psychological manipulation/social engineering, amplified by technology adding it to everything [Tears of joy] Here's the real question: if the position needs tips to survive (like often in the case with wait staff), then isn't the employer paying them a subpar/insufficient wage then outsourcing his responsibility as the employer to pay his staff to the customer through tipping? all banking on the net they can guilt you into it and if you don't people will get mad at you, but you aren't the one who deliberately chose not to pay them sufficiently to begin with. definitely a flawed system. I've seen if I have to walk up to order, come fetch my own product, if nothing tangibly was done like serving you or being more than a body at a station etc as no tipping decision gates. Also, if you stop and consider how much a percentage based tip comes out to as per hour when compared to other highly technical jobs can be eye opening
