It's not a line from the libretto. It's a phrase that escaped from someone who couldn't stay silent anymore. Her name was never recorded, but the scene was — the caricaturist William Hogarth drew it. The one who provoked it was Carlo Broschi, known as Farinelli, the most famous castrato in history. His voice reached, at the time, from A below middle C to D two octaves above, with breathing control described as extraordinary. The aria you hear, "Ombra fedele anch'io", was not written by a stranger. It was written by his own brother, Riccardo Broschi, for the London premiere of "Artaserse" in 1734. Family drama turned into sheet music. Today no one sings like that — Farinelli's voice type disappeared. The soundtrack of the 1994 film about him exists because IRCAM engineers recorded separately the Polish soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska and the American countertenor Derek Lee Ragin, and merged the two voices into one, digitally. What you hear does not come from any living throat today. The voice that made a woman shout "One God, one Farinelli" took two people, 260 years later, to reconstruct it. If you could hear only one of the two voices that make up this Farinelli — the soprano or the countertenor — which would you choose?
