every piece of furniture i own is either thrifted or bought from a previous tenant, you can get some really good stuff and most of it looks good too! (the ugly stuff is just plain and boring, but functional and cheap so I wasn't complaining)

Okay, but spend on your sofa also means spend on the right kind of sofa. If you spend $2000 on a plywood couch, it's still plywood and won't last. I have a $600 (at the time) Ikea couch with a steel frame that looks new, and is eleven years old. The one before that cost twice as much and was done by year four
