@nbcchicago: A new study shows a link between a widely-used artificial sweetener and major cardiovascular events including death or stroke. Xylitol is found in numerous sugar-free candies, baked goods, nut butters, gums and even toothpastes. The study, released Aug. 26 by the European Society of Cardiology, was based on a long-term analysis on the effects of the additive which is widely used to replace dietary sugar. While low amounts of the naturally-occurring sugar alcohol is found in some natural foods, Xylitol is often added in high amounts as an artificial sweetener to dozens of foods, drinks and dental products. #xylitol #gum #sweetener #food #drinks #health #heartattack #stroke

Before you ask, no mainstream diet sodas contain xylitol. Keep drinking that Diet Coke

As a dietitian, correlation is not causation. this is not a reason to stop using the sweetener. wait for deterministic studies to prove it's actually an issue (which they won't, because it isn't)

1 study that is still not finished AND it is high levels (over the daily value). Anything can be toxic if you have it over the recommended limit.

But it's allowed in toothpaste, gum, etc... 1 study doesn't make it valid.

Really? Tell that to Japanese and Koreans, they have tons of products with it and don't have problems. Is this another coconut oil propaganda thing against Asian countries?

Wasnt this the same study that showed you would need to eat over 2 pound of xylitol powder every month for this to happen?

The problem is high fructose corn syrup not xylitol.

Yes it's true xylitol is causing these problems but it's not used in artificial sweeteners it is a natural sweetener her statement makes no sense

Hmmm sounds suspicious. Xylitol is good for not just dental stuff, but it’s also good for acid reflux as well.
