@exz701: Born in Al-Awja near Tikrit in 1937, Saddam grew up under the care of his mother and nationalist uncle. He joined the Ba'ath Party in 1957. Following a failed 1959 assassination attempt on Prime Minister Abd al-Karim Qasim, he fled into exile in Egypt before returning to play a central role in the July 1968 coup that brought the Ba'athists to power permanently 1968–1979 As Vice President under Ahmed Hassan al-Bakr, Saddam consolidated control over security services. During this period, he directed the nationalization of Iraq's oil industry in 1972, driving state-funded infrastructure, healthcare, literacy programs, and economic expansion. 1979–1988 Saddam assumed the presidency in July 1979, purging rivals within the Ba'ath Party. In September 1980, he launched an invasion of Iran, beginning an eight-year war of attrition. During the conflict, his government carried out the Anfal campaign against Kurdish populations, including the 1988 chemical attack on Halabja. The war ended in a stalemate in 1988. 1990–2002 In August 1990, Iraqi forces invaded Kuwait, prompting a US-led coalition response in early 1991 (Operation Desert Storm) that expelled Iraqi forces. Saddam crushed subsequent Shia and Kurdish uprisings in 1991. Iraq remained under stringent United Nations sanctions throughout the 1990s and faced ongoing deadlocks over UN weapons inspections.. 2003–2006 In March 2003, a US-led coalition invaded Iraq, unseating the Ba'athist government. Saddam went into hiding until his capture by US forces near Tikrit in December 2003.
