Years ago, Stephen Muriithi was admitted to the same hospital after reportedly being scalded with hot water by his then-wife. Lydia cared for him during his recovery. For more than three months, their relationship reportedly grew from nurse and patient into love. After he was discharged, the two married. For nearly 20 years, they built a life together. But on May 19, 2022, that love story ended in tragedy. Lydia was reportedly stabbed multiple times at their home in Unjiru, Mathira West, Nyeri County. Police launched a manhunt for her husband, who had fled the scene. The case later reached the High Court in Nyeri, where Stephen Muriithi Githinji was charged with the murder of Lydia Nyaguthii Gachara.
