The first row is half double crochet and then you went to third row. Did you intentionally call the chain a row?

So why on the first row after your chain, you said start in the 2nd stitch, then the 3rd row you said start in the 1st stitch......... however, it's the same stitch from the hook? This makes patterns so confusing
