The name of the bread that we know as pumpernickel was first presented in Napoleon Bona, apart as a food for his soldiers he didn’t like it all he said was. In his language, give it to pumpernickel. Is essentially saying that he was food for the horses.

Yes and no. That's only one of the theories. It can also mean farting St. Nicolas or a kind of person... Well, the German words grob and klotzig can both mean physically wider, muscular, but not well-defined in their muscles, or someone who isn't all that bright OR someone who is violent, depending on region and context. And another theory is that it's from the Swiss Pumperniggel, meaning not worth the slightest effort. (But I hope that one isn't true, as a German who loves Pumpernickel 😅)
