@popculturescientist: Staging was a major development in rocket science that changed how far a rocket can go. But it also changed how fast it could go...and that would change everything. This us is Rocket to the Moon. Episode 5: R7 Semyorka #rocketscience #nasa #space #popculturescientist #stem
Shouldn’t they jettison just the tank and go all the way on the same set of engines. That would be the very lightest configuration.

I visited the Titan II missile silo museum and I remember them saying it used hydrazine and O2 which meant the rocket could be stored fueled. Also, the famous “nuclear codes” actually opened a butterfly valve to let the rocket ignite.

The R-7 core stage also went into orbit too, for Sputnik, it went into orbit and then decoupled Sputnik. The large stage had a lot more atmospheric drag, so de orbited faster but it was still in orbit for 2 months. Later they designed upper stages but these launches happened before they figured out how to light and engine mid flight.

I love that rocket design as it's the cartoon/comic design of childhood

Isn’t another advantage that it lets you optimise different sets of rocket motors for different altitudes and air pressures
