‘In the wild they…’ has to be one of the most overused (and honestly most exhausting) phrases I hear as a reptile owner. My reptiles were born in captivity, raised in captivity, and aren’t packing their bags for a return to the wild anytime soon. What works in the wild doesn’t always translate to their lives now. If we’re going to play the ‘wild’ card, then by that logic, humans should ditch grocery stores, lace up some animal-hide sandals, and start foraging for berries and hunting deer with spears. Sounds fun, right? Here’s the reality: captivity and the wild are completely different environments. My job isn’t to pretend they’re living in some untouched wilderness; it’s to provide the best care for the life they actually have—warm beds, safe enclosures, and all the dubia roaches their spoiled little hearts desire. I’m not going to release the dubia roaches in my home so they can “hunt” naturally. Seriously, who does that? 🤣
