Biotechnology is a frontier technology that harnesses biological systems, living organisms, or their derivatives. This technology frontier sits at the intersection of biology, chemistry, and engineering, and in our view has a medium to long-term horizon in the technological landscape. The excitement surrounding biotechnology stems from its potential to redefine healthcare, agriculture, environmental management and other sectors. By manipulating the fundamental building blocks of life, biotechnology offers solutions to some of humanity’s most pressing challenges, from curing diseases to addressing food security and climate change. Sir Paul Nurse, Nobel laureate and former president of the Royal Society, emphasised the importance of biotechnology: “Biology is the science of the 21st century. We are now unravelling the complexity of biological systems, which will revolutionise our ability to manipulate the living world”. Our assessment indicates that biotechnology is one of the most important frontier technologies due to its transformative potential, innovation, and significant economic and societal impacts, despite some challenges in scalability and accessibility. The global biotechnology market is experiencing robust growth. In 2021, the market was valued at $1.02 trillion and is projected to reach $3.44 trillion by 2030, growing at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.9%. Key growth drivers include: 1) Increasing demand for personalised medicine 2) Rising prevalence of chronic diseases 3) Advancements in genetic engineering techniques 4) Growing investments in research and development 5) Supportive government policies and funding Multiple advancements will be crucial for pushing the biotechnology industry forward, addressing global challenges, and unlocking new opportunities across healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sectors. Biotechnology landscape is evolving fast, particularly in the U.S. According to European Commission study on innovation in biotechnology, the U.S. are by far the country with the highest share of biotech patents (39%), followed by the EU (18% share) and China (10%). The U.S. dominance in this technology frontier is even more evident when looking at the value share of the biotech sector worldwide with the U.S. taking more than half of the global value (58%), far ahead of China (11.3%), Denmark (6.9%), the Netherlands (3.1%), South Korea (2.8%) and the UK (2.7%).
