35 weeks pregnant. Orthopaedic surgery resident. And having a planned C-section at 37 weeks. Not the birth plan I originally imagined — but the safest one. I was diagnosed with vasa previa, a rare condition where fetal blood vessels run very close to the cervix. If those vessels rupture during labor or when the water breaks, it can lead to rapid, life-threatening blood loss for the baby. Because of that risk, the safest and most evidence-based approach is a planned C-section before labor begins. This diagnosis also meant modifying parts of my work in orthopaedics — a physical specialty with long OR days, lifting, positioning, and reductions. I worked until 33 weeks and am incredibly grateful for a stable pregnancy and a team that prioritized safety. In surgery we learn there’s always a plan A, B, and C. I’m just grateful this is a planned C-section rather than an emergency.
