My advice, write a CV if and only if one page on a resume cannot effectively describe your past experience OR if you are pivoting in your career, you should probably explain that decision

I just started my sophomore year in mechanical engineering and I haven’t applied for any internships. Im working on a project where I 3d scan and use CAD to modify tail lights for cars. Would this help with getting the internship next year or is there better things to put my time to?

Should I swap aerospace to computer engineering. It’s my first semester I enjoy hardware and software but I am only beginning working with code but I enjoy it more than the idea of vibrations or heat transfer. Only some of C and python. Only issue with aerospace is I don’t wanna work in cali for propulsion or any defense industries. But I’m currently at a propulsion lab so I’ve set my feet in a little but thinking of swapping

You said that the recruiter doesn’t read these letters then went on and said take time and write an actual cover letter 😭😭. Grind a project or two for your resume, tailor your resume for the role, lock in and study for interviews and you will get a top internship it is not that hard

honestly though, having connections will instantly eliminate 90% of the battle, get in contact with people from the company or have friends that have gotten in there previously and use that as leverage to get in.
