@project_past: Hard to imagine a place so beautiful was the scene of our country’s bloodiest day. #americancivilwar #antietambattlefield #americanhistory #historytiktok #antietam
Been here hundreds of times, love history! Great paved roads to bike or walk on and read all the monuments! Such a horrific battle if you read the personal histories. Really a beautiful place today. Used to be the absolute best around to celebrate the 4th of July but for some reason they stopped having it here. Wish they’d bring that back! Many accounts still today of people seeing soldiers and small skirmishes here that visitors believed were reenactors and when they inquired at the building they were told they don’t have re-enactments there. My farm was a campsite and hospital for this battle. There are old photos of arms and legs piled outside my bedroom window (the room used as an operating room). You really have to take a moment and appreciate the courage, honor, and valor of those men to face that.

I have been Antietam once, Gettysburg twice, Harpers Ferry WV and Frederick Md three times. I live in Cincinnati Oh and it has a little Civil War history of its own. Morgan's Raiders skirted at same time Gettysburg was being fought, skirted around Cincinnati due to the fact it was heavily fortified by Union forces. Fun fact, my favorite Cemetery in Southgate Ky is where half of the Union forces positioned themselves await Morgan and his troops. Also August Ky had a skirmish on the river and though the deaths were not the mass casualties we are used to hearing in the larger battles, at least 30 or more were killed.
