His plan was to force Tsar Alexander I to make peace, but the Russians avoided giving him the decisive battle he wanted. After the Battle of Borodino, Napoleon entered Moscow expecting negotiations. Instead, the city was largely abandoned and fires broke out across Moscow. With winter approaching and supplies running low, Napoleon was forced to retreat. The retreat became catastrophic. Disease, hunger, exhaustion, attacks, and the freezing Russian winter devastated the Grande Armée. By the time Napoleon reached the western borders, only a fraction of his original force remained.
