Yaffa, Palestine, is one of the world's oldest port cities, dating back over 4,000 years. Sitting along the Mediterranean coast, it became known as "The Bride of the Sea." Before the 1948 Nakba, Yaffa was Palestine's largest city, known globally for its export of delicious oranges. It was home to the newspaper Filastin, as well as other publishing houses, cinemas, athletic clubs, etc. During the 1948 Nakba, 95% of Palestinians in Yaffa were forcibly exiled, and today there are 700,000 refugees from Yaffa. The Palestinians who were able to remain were concentrated in the Al-Ajami neighborhood, which was then surrounded by barbed wire and turned into a Zionist militia-controlled ghetto. Palestinian farmers who remained were turned into cheap laborers on their own land, and the new illegal occupying state began the Judaization of the city, erasing Palestinian history from street names to school textbooks. Yaffa is one of my favorite cities in Palestine, and inshallah one day in a liberated Palestine I would love to call it my home. But visiting post-October 7th was incredibly difficult. Seeing settlers living peacefully while jets flew overhead toward Gaza was gut-wrenching. To stand in a city from which so many Palestinians were expelled while watching the ongoing Nakba and destruction of Gaza from above was extremely hard. Getting to and from Yaffa on public transportation as a visibly Muslim woman came with its own risks and challenges. But alhamdulillah, I made it there and back safely. Despite everything, I’m grateful that I got to visit Yaffa again, see its beauty, and document pieces of a city that israelis have tried so hard to erase Palestinians from entirely. Episode 10 of my 3 Months in Palestine series is now up on my YouTube, link in bio 🇵🇸❤️ #yaffa #palestine #travelvlog
Black Americans are constantly associated with Africa, but why? We’re one of the oldest groups in America, with roots going back to the early colonial period. Our history also includes generations of intermingling with Indigenous people. So why are Black Americans constantly Africanized when we’re arguably one of the most deeply American-rooted groups in the country? 🇺🇸 For the full video, please like and subscribe to my YouTube.
