most of latin america is terribly racist unfortunately. anti blackness is global. i don’t think there’s anywhere where racism is not present and it makes me angry seeing how it affects darker skinned people in my family when traveling

Bogotano here. Thank you for sharing. You are correct, there is a lot of racism in Bogota and Colombia in general. Historically speaking ppl from bogota have looked down on coastal cities bc there’s a lot more Afro Colombians. That being said, you will also meet a lot of people who aren’t racist and will welcome you with open arms. A lot of the younger generation esp leans left and is different from older generations. I hope you get to go back and meet some cool people, much love!

I am glad you enjoyed Medellin and Cartagena. Cartagena is one of my favorite cities , great food. You would also enjoyed Santa Marta , el parque tayrona if you ever go back. Basically all the coast of Colombia is where you will find most of our black population and also in Cali. Cali is very mix .

I lived in Colombia for 3 years during childhood as a mixed child (Half Black). I lived in Bogota and I can tell you from personal experience I faced a lot of racism not just in school but in public as well. Bogota does have a very small black population, with the overwhelming majority of Bogota being mestizo or white.

Interesting. I'm looking at retirement in Bogota Colombia. I'm working hard to get to B2 level. As an older AA male, I was told that my language skills will definitely help in my social integration.

Colombia has a large population of black people about 20%. Remember that slavery wasn’t just the United States. The slave ship dropped people off in different places and one of them was Colombia. Drop the name of the club in Bogota that they didn’t want to let you in. Thanks for the go fund me. FYI, I’m a black Colombia who left the country for the USA when I was 16 and I now live in Europe.

Cartagena was a vibe ❤️Medellin was okay I guess, the men were b*tchy IMO, I was there for 3 months. Bogotá, I’ve only ever been to the airport and I HATE going through there bc they always have bad attitudes.

Football has a similar practice of forcing star athletes to eat and hangout together and avoid lower level players and civilians to create a hivemind hiearchy. When you were in colombia did you feel a kinship with the black ppl selling trinkets on the street in the restaurants or did you feel like a Stanford Rep on a tour thru Harlem or a 3rd world country?
