25 years as a software engineer here, not a single line in the past 6 months. definitely copium, it was fun while it lasted

it was hard for me as well and I decided to literally write the code manually without agent and it’s refreshing

Helped dev an app that made millions a week for a large company. Probably 99.99% AI generated code. Expensive bugs did occur.

The sense of accomplishment has diminished so much from this. I remember getting such a dopamine hit from submitting a PR, not any more

"I don't read or test the code any more", no, this is not just the next abstraction layer, this is a fundamentally more careless and irresponsible way of doing your job

If I stop to read the code I can no longer keep up with the ridiculous deadline expectations that have been adjusted to assume AI is writing everything

sr team lead and architect here..... our industry took a massive change in just 1yr. the upheaval is massive. I do miss solving problems in code. now I solve them by training LLM skills so the model is more efficient.

every software engineers listen up, save up your money to fund your first farm. get into farming. Farming has always been your true calling. the world needs more food not data centers.

My intern just finished their project and they felt bad about outsourcing the work to AI. I made this point and said that I’ve been coding since before UI frameworks were a thing and THAT abstraction felt like cheating too. IMO, the trick is to make sure you’re outsourcing your work to AI and not your thinking. Use that bandwidth that’s freed up to spend more time on product design, user flows, reliability, architecture, etc.

Languages have gotten higher and higher level over the years. This time, the language is just English.

everyone saying that code was never our job, just a means to a goal, and I understand it, but man, I fucking miss coding, I did really enjoy the hours thinking to type the most generic, escalable code, it was my craft, my art, it all clicked so good in my brain when the code compiled when I finished. But it always was a cursed Art, one that only the trained people code appreciate but worthless and soulless to those who didn't understand code, and even worse, the final product was always hiding that art under compiled, minified, and offuscated builds, the final user only wants what the art is making their computer do.

I struggle with this daily. It’s hard to stay engaged and fascinated with work if I’m not hand-writing code anymore. I guess this is just our new normal

Yeah! We can see! Apps are getting shittier and shittier. Agents are not the only reason, but for sure are a big contributor.

I miss a lot the fun of coding, I can't remember the last time I was stuck with a bug and have to call my friends to think together. Man I loved that serotonin rush after fixing something that we thought was unfixable.

No this is not the next evolution. LLMs are fancy compression algorithms, so our codebases are quickly degrading while nobody even looks at the code anymore (as you admitted). Consider what happens when you repeatedly upload and download a JPG. The same thing is happening to our codebases but either nobody can see it or nobody gives a shit. I proudly still write as much code as I can by hand so that I can be ahead of the rest of you when the inevitable LLM collapse comes and we have to start fixing all of this code.

This is so depressing for me. I graduated last year and it feels like I'm expected to learn so much and do so much I have never even seen or experienced before and if I can't do it - if I can't do these extreme things there's no hope for me. I love solving problems but everyday I feel more inadequate and incapable because I can't build an entire front end and back end in a couple of hours. I'm brand new to this of course not but that means my boss is going to get mad I can't meet the deadline this Friday? How must I learn and struggle with problems if I'm not allowed time to be a Junior? It's so bad I'm considering maybe another field like analytics but it's probably even worse there😔 I feel like it's my fault somehow

hi! . I'm a fellow ex-googler here. similar experience as yours but in different field. ~1.5 years going through the same experience, my take is: as a human we need to 'create' something to energize us. For you, it feels like AI took that important piece. as you used to 'create' stuff but now AI taking those excitement. My suggestion is do something that let you 'create' stuff. online, offline, experiment with life with or without AI. and see which one excites you the most. Sometimes when you feel empty, it's a wake up call to do things differently. Just trust your instinct!
