⚠️Diadema setosum AKA long spined sea urchin⚠️ 🔅Diadema setosum is a species of long-spined sea urchin belonging to the family Diadematidae 🔅 The spines are mildly venomous and cause painful stings when stepped on but pose no serious threat to humans 🔅 They’re edible and are quite delicious 🔅The species can be found throughout the Indo-Pacific region, from Australia and Africa to Japan and the Red Sea making them an invasive species in our sea 🌊 🔅Diadema setosum can be differentiated from other species of diadema by their unique 5 white dots (some are visible in this reel) 🔅There are over 200 different species of sea urchins 🔅unlike humans, sea urchins dont have bones to support their bodies instead they have a shell-like structure called a “test” 🔅All their internal organs are inside the test 🔅The hard shell made from calcium carbonate is similar to that of starfish and sand dollars and is their main form of protection along to their spines 🔅They also have blue and in some cases red spots that are vibrant in color 🔅They mainly munch on algae they will eat anything from coralline algae to green hair algae 🔅If their population is left unchecked they could pose a threat What do you think of these sea urchin ?
