@adhdchildbootcamp: If you don't want your ADHD child to be left out at recess — you need to teach them how to join — not just how to play. Most ADHD children know how to play. They don't know how to get in. That is the gap. And it is teachable. The joining moment is one of the most neurologically demanding things a child can do. It requires reading a group already in motion — the game, the roles, the unspoken rules, the right moment to step in and the right thing to say. For a neurotypical child, this happens in seconds. For the ADHD brain — which processes social information more slowly and with more effort — the moment is often gone before the calculation is complete. So the ADHD child stands at the edge. Watching. Not because they don't want to join. Because they don't know how — in that specific, pressured, fast-moving moment — to make the move that gets them in without getting them rejected. What they do instead is what the ADHD brain does when it cannot find the right entry point: it forces one. They walk into the middle of the game. They change a rule. They do something big enough to guarantee a reaction — because a reaction, even a negative one, is at least a form of contact. And suddenly they are in — but not in the way they needed to be. What is teachable: the joining script. Specific words for specific situations. "Can I play?" is too vulnerable. "What are you playing?" starts a conversation. "I know how to play that" offers something. Practise it at home. Role-play it. Make the script automatic so the brain has something to reach for when the moment arrives. The gap is not interest.
