The profound dignity that exists in genuinely caring and standing by that, still standing up in the face of apathy and ridicule and hatred. Those poisoned by an overdose of cynicism may mock you for it, try to strip you of any and all dignity. But you can always retain it in the most meaningful sense, regardless, can grow it within you, simply in continuing to care. Lifeforms and inanimate things mattering to you generates meaning in your life at the most essential microscopic level; it's that which gives your life its unique character. You quite randomly encounter these things while you are alive, they come to matter to you deeply, and that becomes the landscape of your one life. To keep caring is difficult, it takes great strength, and it's that resolute nature within something so utterly authentically-felt which is deeply dignified, admirable. None of the truly valuable things we have would've ever come to be without people who care keeping it alive, against all manner of hurdles and potentially demoralising circumstances. And it's an ancient thing, it's a thread which runs through all of recorded history and mythology. No one can ever defeat your will to keep caring, you can only defeat it yourself by letting it die within you. It isn't even linked to "happiness", it's something much more profound
