Former Boss: what happens if we train them and they leave? Me: what happens if we don’t train them and they stay??

Dude. Even Burger King pays you to watch the food safety videos before you start in the kitchen.

Employer could hire people who already have completed the trainins... but they'd be paying more for that employee.

If it’s mandatory training, then you have to pay for it if it’s voluntary training and they can opt out then they’ll pay for it. I don’t understand how that’s so hard for management to understand, but I see it constantly.

So I have to do the training for my job but you’re not going to pay me? What else are you not going to pay me for? No thanks.

the German "Bildungsurlaub" would melt their minds - you choose the training you want, employer has to let you take it, and pay you while you're doing it

this happened to me at h&r block. We had to clock in under a different code that was paid at minimum wage every single time we did certifications. Mind you we would be doing those while also doing our regular job. Once we finished the certification we were told to clock out of that code and clock back in under our regular one which was $6/hr more.

There were a few times that we were required to travel for training that was 100% mandatory to continue employment and the company covered all of the expenses, including gas and meals and paid us for being there

If it’s a mandatory work requirement, the employer pays for the employees time. It really is that simple.

I would also be asking if a payrise comes with the certification if they refuse to pay for the training time.

I’m the director of a small preschool on a tight budget. Our teachers are required to take 10hrs of CE every year. We pay for the training and we pay the teachers for the 10hrs. Why is this hard to understand?!

Americans have the worst bosses and they don’t even realise it. In Canada, if an employer tried to do this, it would be on the news as a gross and ridiculous violation of workers rights.

Teachers. Teachers are required to take X amount of continuing education every year. At. Their. Own. Expense. And that is in addition to them paying for materials to do their jobs. 🤬

Are there any states where a job can force an employee to do training and not be paid for that time? I thought this was an absolute legal thing.
