I am being given a hermit crab from a family who has him in a glass tank with zero substrate,improper food, and improper water, he has lived this way for about 6 months, should I give him the full 6 inches or slowly introduce deeper substrate the longer I have him? should I be worried about Post Purchase Death Syndrome?

i got two hermit crabs on the 25th of august and i havent seen the smaller guy scence friday the 28th when this picture wad taken i dont know if he is just molting because thats what i thought at first but my mom keeps telling me she thinks hes dead but idk and im scared any advice? also i got them from the pet store and i am going to take there spounges out and im ordering them complete meals
