I would say it’s nearly never necessary to take a baby away from a mother. In most countries they have mother baby psych wards, because this is a real, recurrent medical problem. And having nursery staff, medical staff, psych staff, and safety staff present to take care of both of them in the same facility safely saves lives.

I was diagnosed well after the fact with PP OCD. I had no idea what it was I hid it for years. And back when I was pregnant they would have likely taken my infant twins if I asked for help. It feels like you are going insane but the difference is you can understand that the intrusive thoughts aren’t real. In pp psychosis you believe they are reality, and you may hear voices.
