I think the depictions of Jesus discovering his mission piece by piece over the course of his life are spot on. Those 40 days in the desert were a crash course in where he needed to be and why. So, each piece of the puzzle we have from the utterances the Scripture writers remembered to write down give us insight into what the kingdom of God is about. I suspect they didn't fully understand what they wrote and how future generations would (mis)interpret every word they jotted down. You would think Jesus didn't understand astronomy from what the writers wrote down.

What did Jesus actually say? Jesus did not avoid the subject of hell. In fact, He spoke about it plainly and seriously. He warned about the danger of being cast into hell, described it as a place of judgment, spoke of the worm that does not die and the fire that is not quenched, and warned that it is far better to part with anything that causes us to sin than to be cast into hell. Jesus spoke of hell because He wanted people to understand the seriousness of sin and the certainty of divine judgment. Consider these examples: • Matthew 5:22 — Jesus warned that the one who says, “You fool!” may be “in danger of hell fire.” • Matthew 5:29–30 — He said it is better to lose an eye or a hand than for the whole body to be cast into hell. • Matthew 10:28 — Jesus warned His disciples not to fear those who can kill the body, but to fear God, “which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell.” • Matthew 18:9 — He again taught that it is better to enter life with one eye than to have two eyes and be cast into “hell fire.” • Matthew 23:33 — Jesus confronted the scribes and Pharisees, asking, “How can ye escape the damnation of hell?” • Mark 9:43–48 — Jesus described hell as a place where “the fire is not quenched” and “their worm dieth not.” • Luke 12:4–5 — He taught that after a person has been killed, God has authority to cast into hell. • Luke 16:19–31 — In the account of the rich man and Lazarus, Jesus described the rich man as being in torment after death and separated from comfort by “a great gulf.”
