So when I was teaching myself guitar many years ago what I did is just find several chords that sounded nice together and played them one after the other to increase finger flexibility and make a smoother transition. and everytime i found a song that I liked but had an unfamiliar chord I'd look it up and then make a another progression that sounded nice. this way you don't get stuck on a particular songs timing early on.
