On 5 July 1977, Pakistan entered one of the most defining and controversial chapters of its political history. General Muhammad Zia-ul-Haq, then Chief of Army Staff, declared martial law across the country after months of political unrest, protests and a growing crisis surrounding the 1977 general elections.
