The relationship between p//rn use and negative outcomes is soooo much more nuanced than saying it hijacks your brain but that nuance gets lost ALL the f*cking time in fear based education. That shame that comes from this approach is important bc the research on moral incongruence has plenty to say about the distress people experience when their p//rn use conflicts with their beliefs, including greater self-perception of having a p//rn problem. That doesn’t mean every concern is just shame, nor does it mean compulsive or harmful use isn’t a real outcome and experience for some but it does mean we need to accurately assess what is causing what. I have spent the last five years reading, studying and dissecting the research in this area. This video pulls from that larger body of knowledge, not one specific article that supposedly proves every sentence I said. I’ll add related research below, and I also have an ADHD Realities podcast episode (Are You Actually Addicted to P//rn Or Just Ashamed of It?) where I unpack the literature and all the nuance that social media keeps f*cking removing and you can find that link in my bio.
