I wonder if Oliver had been in that world the longest. Would explain why he was extra attached to buddy and why he was so tired at the end.

I feel like Buddy is also like a litmus test to see how well parents research what their kids consume. Given how many parents took their kids to see the movie without researching and seeing that it's a horror movie

i feel this reply lends credence to the darker interpretation. it indicates this was a creative choice, not a coincidence

Little off topic but I’m glad you’re using “interpretation” & “theory” here unlike some other viewers who’re treating their own (or the ones they adopt from other ppl) as fact & not leaving room for any other way of thing.

or parents taking their kids assuming its a kids movie only to find our it was rated R. parents are blinded by pictures not lore.

Yk what would be interesting (they kind of did this) but if each kid represented a different reaction/response that kids/people usually have when they are groomed/manipulated.

I just remembered that when I was a kid watching Barney I’d sometimes walk up very close to the tv and touch the screen, so the way these kids got into the show isn’t that unrealistic.

I personally think the parents throwing tantrums over this movie are just seeing flaws in their parenting or lack thereof. It's easier to blame a movie than to be accountable. Love your insight into this, please continue this breakdown

My fingers accidentally got slammed with the car trunk door as a kid because I was looking for my Baby-Bop backpack, and I still sing 'The Barney Bag' song. We were IN it. 😅🤣

I think you’re right on both but that there’s also a 3rd allegory - the Donald comparison you made - but in the end when you realize buddy is bad but there’s something even bigger than him going on…a whole system to grab these kids. Kind of like maybe a real life island. Or something unknown to the public even bigger than that. I really think it’s all 3 meanings all at once, which makes it pretty genius imo.

I just saw a tiktok comparing the Barney theme song to the one in the Buddy movie, it’s such a good mimic but a great point I didn’t realise until I saw a comment highlighting it was that Barney’s theme is “I love you, you love me” and ends in “won’t you say you love me too?” but it’s not meant to actually manipulate the kids’ emotions (the kid actors or the kids watching at home), it’s more just asking, but the Buddy theme is straight up demanding with “you love Buddy, yes you do” and isn’t offering anything genuine to the kids in return, he’s just coercive and controlling right off the bat.

Plus, buddy was just as mortal as them, he wasn’t untouchable, if those kids and adults had come together, they wouldve put him in the ground. I interpreted it as our general inability to come together and see the writing on the wall and take out those who harm us. Kids like Oliver were groomed, just like us, choosing to believe and accept the evil that they were familiar with, rather than taking a leap into the unknown. his fatigue spoke to me, when you’re so tired, you refuse to do anything else and just accept. You know it’s harmful, that’ll never truly improve, but if it hurts you a little less than others—maybe it’s worth it.
