@thotij: Liberation psychology asks us to look beyond the individual and examine the social conditions surrounding our struggles. Sometimes personal responsibility matters. Sometimes psychological treatment matters. But sometimes suffering also makes more sense when we understand the systems, environments, and power structures people are living within. #Psychology #Sociology #SocialJustice #MentalHealth
I genuinely believe we are going through zoochosis as a people. We are not meant to be living the way we are! We are so disconnected from nature

The patriarchal system is the entire problem.

Thank you for this! Despite intuitive nudges to the contrary, I'd been trying to get myself to cope with my circumstances or change them by myself rather than ask for help... Even after watching this I struggle with the idea of asking for help but I do want to lean into community.

this is why I call the mainstream approach egocentric psychology (as in individual centred) and the decolonized approach allocentric psychology (as in world centred). mental illness (or any disability) starts with environmental factors because it isn't about what is wrong with the individual, it's about how to integrate them into society in a healthy way that respects their sovereignty as an individual.

I can’t control another person’s interpretation of my expressions. I’m autistic and sometimes people misinterpret my behavior negatively thinking I’m mean or careless, when the opposite is often the case. I feel this is a social issue where the people around me want me to conform to something I can’t see. Because I’m criticized or bullied for not behaving as they expect, it places me into a state of anxiety.

Very rarely do I see patients who are “disordered”, rather are having a reasonable reaction to their environment or something done to them. But also, we are taught to diagnose severity based on impairment which is mostly measured by level of productivity being impacted.

my son with autism said the most profound thing a few weeks ago, he said: "I'm at the bottom of the social hierarchy, so I might as well do what I want if they weren't going to like me anyway". And he's right. He's liberated himself from standards and expectations that were always going to be rigged against him. I think more people should do the same.

Depressed being a new mom, was having a really hard time coping… and then realized so many other new moms are going through the same, and maybe it has more to do with our society not supporting new mothers or acknowledging/appreciating their efforts

Part of personal responsibility is discerning (1) what's in your control (2) whether it's you or the environment that is primarily the problem. Then taking action to either change the environment or change yourself and your mindset.
I thought I had an anxiety disorder - certainly the individualistic brand of psychology would have said so. Lack of resilience or whatever. Turned out I needed to quit my job. Six years after walking away and I have not had any anxiety that whole time.

This is fascinating and has made me ponder. The family, people, and our circumstances absolutely play a role. Who do we have to become? I've played lots of roles, many were not mine. How does that affect me and others?

As a therapist being aware of social justice & systemic issues are part of the ethical code for licensure so if we're out there not doing our due diligence, we're not practicing ethically.

so important to re center this idea. we work with survivors of continuous uninterrupted violence. we are compelled to validate the suffering due to the circumstances. this taught us to ask the same in all supportive interventions. that distinction is quite effective.

Both views make sense on their individual levels. Like someone deciding to be child free is a highly person choice likely informed by their experiences while at the same time they are part of a larger societal movement which many argue is a result of current material conditions.

I’m reading Duran’s “Healing the Soul Wound” courtesy of your videos/Substack and it’s quickly becoming a favorite. Thank you so much for your work, especially on highlighting such systems- and communal-inclusive perspectives on how we (we!) redefine wellbeing. I so appreciate your presence at this time.
