So many people in this comment section don’t know what actually paving the way means. In this context it means making it easier for others to be recognised, especially in the west. It doesn’t mean BTS invented kpop or smth like that. And paving the way is what BTS did, not even intentionally. Not psy nor second gen groups and artists paved the way. Psy was a one hit wonder and he was see as a “funny” phenomenon. His career didn’t see much growth in the west. Many people didn’t even know that gangnam style was Korean or Kpop or what country psy was from. His following releases decreased in popularity and he was literally gone from the western music market. So he didn’t really make it easier for Kpop to be recognised. (Which is not his fault, I’m not shading on him, it’s just facts). First and second gen idols also didn’t pave the way. Of course the system helped bts exist as a group cause they’re all part of the kpop idol training system, but these idols didn’t make it easier for anyone in kpop to be recognised in the western music market even if they had the resources unlike BTS. Their attempts failed so they actually made it hard cause after the failures no one really dared to enter the western music market again. And what I’ve read a lot is that they only paved the way for themselves and closed it for others in Kpop. People think that other groups might be in the shadows of BTS’s fame. But that’s only if you take the paved way to BE bts or replicate their history and fame which should not be the goal. Kpop groups should just be their authentic selves and find their identity as artists. The road is paved thanks to bts which is a good thing. Kpop is getting more recognised. Idk why everyone talks so negative about it. Just appreciate it. It’s a road to finally have visibility in the western music market and be recognised. It’s not a road to be BTS or achieve their success. I’ve also seen people write that every group paved their own way. I think they meant that every group works hard on their own to be successful. That is indeed true. But again, that doesn’t mean paving the way for anyone in Kpop. People try to deny BTS’s achievements sooo much, it’s insane.
