When people are teenagers, they are already struggling to understand who they are and find the courage to show society their true selves. For some LGBTQ+ young people, coming out can be incredibly difficult because they fear rejection from their families, communities, and society.
Sometimes religion is used to tell them, “God loves you, but you have to be this way or that way.” When someone is constantly made to feel that who they are is unacceptable, the pain can become overwhelming.
When LGBTQ+ people die by suicide, we should not simply say they were “broken” or “mentally sick.” We also need to look at the rejection, shame, bullying, isolation, and lack of acceptance they may have experienced. A young person should never feel that they have to choose between being accepted by society and being true to themselves.
Love should not make someone feel ashamed of existing. We need more compassion, understanding, and support—especially for young people who are still trying to find their true themselves.
