Desmond Doss saved an estimated 75 to 100 wounded American soldiers at Hacksaw Ridge during World War II. Major Feats and Actions The Rescue at Hacksaw Ridge: During a fierce Japanese counterattack on the Maeda Escarpment (Okinawa) in May 1945, Doss stayed behind on the 400-foot cliff after his unit was forced to retreat. He single-handedly treated and lowered 75 (some estimates say up to 100) wounded men down the sheer drop using a rescue knot and a rope, praying "Lord, help me get one more" with each trip. Extreme Bravery Under Fire: For hours, he crawled through active mortar, artillery, and machine-gun fire, deliberately operating in enemy-held zones without a weapon or even medical markings on his uniform (to avoid sniper targeting). Selfless Sacrifice When Wounded: After surviving days of intense combat, Doss was severely wounded in the legs by a grenade explosion. While waiting for evacuation, he gave up his spot on a stretcher to a more critically injured soldier. While crawling to safety, a sniper's bullet shattered his arm; he used a rifle stock as a splint and managed to crawl 300 yards to an aid station on his own.
