This is Gregory, he was raised in the house on a bottle for same reason!! we slowly reintroduced him back outside and was fully outside by 6 months..but hes such a people goat and very strong willed and finds a way get out of the pasture if we are outside. Hes a great project manager for my husband and his friend 😂 (who were building fences to go around my trees so Greggy won't eat them 😂)

I don't know what the actual facts are on the "mom won't take her back because she smells wrong" issue, seems like you have that knowledge, but either way it's not relevant considering the fact that she can't compete with her THREE SIBLINGS and wasn't super motivated to nurse from Mom in the first place! She needs to EAT.

My mom grew up on her family farm in the 70s and had a goat that they bottle fed. They named him Baby and he would follow them around like a dog. He would wait for them to get home from school. Bottle babies aren’t anything new. You did the right thing!!

This is wild. There are other ways, but years ago a friends cow lost her calf(dies shortly after birth) and the cow was beside herself. They bought a dairy calf that had been born within the last few days, skinned the dead calf, tied the skin to the new calf, and the mama accepted her adopted baby. A week later they removed the hide.

hey so I'm a vet tech with lots of experience and although I currently do baby horses, not baby goats, they're quite similar. neither one of you are 100% correct about the "myth" part. changing scent *can* be one reason for maternal rejection in many species, but it's really dependent on the individual, and the earlier you attempt reunification, the better the chances. also there are things you can do to increase the odds, such as wiping the baby down with mother's urine before reintroduction. there are no guarantees either way but it's usually worth a try. that being said, you've done nothing wrong, and you definitely saved baby with your intervention. I love a happy story!
