Our landlord raised our rent by $25 this year, he said that due to the increased taxes and other fees, he had to. (Mind you, he also lowered the cost of renting his apartments by $150) so we’re actually paying less than what we were paying.

Charging a luxury fee for ceiling fans and/or air conditioning should be a crime. Charging hundreds of dollars monthly for pets should also be a crime.

If there isn't a pool/good gym (not one treadmill and a couple dumbbells)/regularly scheduled maintenance services, it's not luxury. I should know when I sign a lease for a luxury apartment when pest control comes every month. I should have my own designated parking spot. And the shower head shouldn't have spackle on it.

my last landlord tried to keep our deposit until I told him that I'd send him the video I took the day we left because if something was destroyed, someone must have broken in and it would help him in his police report lol he handed me a check 😂

I had a landlord who tried to withhold my security deposit for wear and tear normal stuff. Luckily I had a friend who was a lawyer and for $10 (so he could officially be on retainer) sent the landlord a letter on his letterhead telling him if he didn’t return the security deposit we hold take him to court 😂

my landlord says we can't put anything on the walls - no nails, no sticky tack, no command strips. we also aren't allowed to wash the walls - I understand it's annoying to patch tiny holes but it's kind of cruel to not allow us to put anything up at all (it is the lease that way). it's wild.

Application fees should be illegal. If an empty unit starts costing money instead of making it maybe that will incentivize filling it faster

Take a detailed video the day you move in AND the day you move out. Both tenants and landlords should do this. And, yes, and itemized list with receipts should be required for charges against your deposit.

I had the best landlord...fixed things without question (especially grateful for the time he came out in -20° weather to get my water heater replaced), left me alone for the most part and only raised my rent a miniscule amount over 4 years...and then, he sold me the place and gave me back my deposit with interest.

Is a landlord kind of need to start leaving it as close to the way they got it. I expect to go in and paint the walls and do a few minor repairs but when I walk into an apartment with it, every room is full of junk I have to haul to the junkyard and it’s not cheap I’ve owned this place for 14 years. I’ve had five tenants, but one of them left it trashed. That money has to come from somewhere.

My landlord is…interesting. I’ve noticed if there are a lot of repairs needed during the year, my rent goes up more. There was just a HUGE repair needed and my rent went up $100. Other years it’s been $15-$20. One year was $50 bc another large repair had been needed. But they say it’s the “market”. No, it’s me paying down the repairs to the house they own.

As somebody who works for a landlord, if you can't pay your rent, you don't need to be there. The landlords take on a lot of grief, they're the ones who, when you you're trying to show in their property they have to come out their pockets to fix it that causes the rent to go up They have to put insurance in on that place. They have to pay maintenance technicians, appliance technicians, and everybody else, you know, their wages. And their time and labor for helping fix that place. That's why the rent goes up

I manage properties on occasion. I always itemize security deposit reductions and evidence with pictures. My license and standing with the state depends on it but even if it didn’t I would because that’s someone else’s money not mine. In my five years of doing this, which most of it is sales, but I’ve managed 4 properties, I have only ever had to withhold the security deposit once, and that was because the cleaners charged me over $1200 for hazardous waste and furniture removal.

If I hand someone an application with our criteria and they apply anyway, that’s on them. I had someone apply who had 2 evictions last year! Never said a word during the tour.

i painted like 2 rooms that were already painted a different color when i moved in. I asked if they could paint it white, they said it would delay move in by a MONTH so i said fuck it cause we needed to move sooner rather than later, repainted the walls and they charged me up the ass for a repainting fee. Left the most horrendous review.

There is a rental in my town where the landlord is requiring ALL maintenance and repairs be done by the tenant. They are only paying taxes, sewer, and insurance. We all know those costs are included in the rent.
