Girl you lost me. This is such a bad take. Once your baby is here and doesn’t have a bowel movement and see them content and not in pain you’ll get a better understanding. Chronic constipation along with a distended stomach are cause for concern. My daughter went 5 days without a BM being EBF. Peds told me with a non tender belly and regularly passing gas that baby is ok to miss days. Adults go days sometimes and that’s just their regular program. It shouldn’t mean they all of a sudden have a GI issue.

Pediatrician here - it IS normal for breastfed babies. If formula fed and no stool after 3 days, I will have concern. If breastfed, I get concerned after 5 days or closer to 1 week. This is unnecessary and will cause fear for new moms over something that is normal. Even as adults some people do not poop daily no matter how much they try/fiber they eat.

I absolutely love your content but this just isn’t at all true and this will make many parents worry about their child when there is no need😓 The AAP and many other reputable sources say normal is several times a day to once every several days, and that 5–7 days between poops can be normal if the baby is otherwise doing well and the stool is soft. Personally my baby has gone 1-3 days in between poops since he was a newborn and he has always been exclusively breastfed and has always been past 90th percentile for weight and I have always fed on demand and have never had any issues with breastfeeding what so ever. I don’t think we should be using how often an infant poops as an indicator for how much milk they are getting because normal is such a wide range and every infant is different.

about 7 doctors told me that its normal for my EBF baby that it was not to poop for 10-14 days...... i kept changing doctors until I found one that believed me something was wrong.... he had H pylori at 2 months old....

QUESTION: what do you recommend for extreme nipple vasospasm? Heat compress before feeding doesn't help and my consultant years ago said there was medication options after we went through the list of things to try before medication. I'm pregnant and would love to try feeding my 3rd child. I've read about Magnesium and Calcium helping along with a prescription that starts with an N but it can lower blood pressure.

Where did you get your sources from if you’re saying all the paediatricians are not correct!? I fear this missed the mark. These doctors know most about infants. And I don’t think this misinformation should be spread especially to new mums who are going crazy about it.

As a momma to a baby who has seen many GI physicians for unrelated issues, every single one of them has said they don’t get concerned unless it’s been more than 7 days or it’s outside of their normal schedule.

Actually not true I was actually so so worked up about this exact thing. Always thought my baby was not getting enough because he was not pooping every day ! It was every 3-5 days! His pediatrician said it was completely normal for him as a newborn!

Kaylee this should be another PhD topic you write about!!! Why so many people think this is normal, why is should NOT be normalized, what the long term risks are to infants not pooping regularly, areas for future research (how/why infants don’t poop frequently), and recommendations for other clinicians/providers to STOP SPREADING THIS MYTH!!
