I agree 100%. Instead of funding police department with military grade weapons and tactical gear, that money needs to be allocated specifically to fund a division that specifically responds to mental health crisis calls and wellness checks by officers and mental health advocates who have specialized training in handling mental health crises. They also need to revamp and sharpen their psychological evaluations of officers; not only new hires, but in a quarterly basis. Anti-discrimination components must me integrated into these assessments.

Defund the police was originally seen as the stepping stone to abolishing the police according to those who came up with the jargon which are actual police abolitionist. Once the term went mainstream many people said well it doesn’t mean get rid of the institution all together it means reform which abolitionist actually disagree with they don’t want reform they do want total abolition. I think if we just mean we need massive police reform and increased allocation of funds into services and better training then say that instead of trying to use a slogan with a meaning originating in the abolition movement.
