My tip for you as I’m currently in my externship. Stay on top of all your scans during epl. Don’t be scared to turn them in, if they fail on the first try it’s okay. They will pass on the second. They will not fail you and I’ve noticed that after taking three epls lol 😅 but stay on top of your scanning!

My Biggest advice would be to take your exams as soon as possible!! Once you are done taking physics schedule your SPI , Once you are done with Externship take your ARRT. Don’t push these important exams for you to take once you’re done with your program. Having the SPI before externship can land you a better externship site allowing you to learn more and possibly getting hired right after externship. Rather than finishing the program and having to take all your exams back to back after since you feel more pressure to find a job :) I hope that makes sense !!

Do not cheat, study all the pathology’s and scan literally as much as possible even when you’re on a break or you’re not doing that comp anymore keep practicing it cause you’re gonna need it. Get as much hands-on time as possible and this is coming from someone in their senior year at Smith Chason and do your SPI as soon as possible it’s gonna get a lot harder to study later on. I wish I did mine earlier. I’m now having to study like five different things at one time

Just a little tip since you went to the same school I did! ❤️I would definitely recommend finding your own clinical site for your externship if you’re able to. A few of my friends and I were placed at different sites, and unfortunately, we barely got to learn or scan because some of our sites had very limited patient volume—sometimes only around 3 patients a week.

School is the easiest part. Externship will be based on your GPA and teacher recommendation. If you’re doing good at scanning, you will get good extern site. If not then you will just be accepting your fate. Be ready for EPL class and exit eval, because that’s when it will test you. Im in bachelor it was the best decision tbh that’s when you will feel ready since you will scan a ton due to 3 EPL, and it helps me be super ready for extern. Im definitely getting more scanning time during extern because I knew more protocols especially advance vascular.

Keep up the good work! Stay focused and retain as much as possible. Focus on all of it… I know that’s not specific but you got this. Passed boards asap to add to your resume and try to get a site with high volume. During labs try to excel in your scanning skills and go to open lab as much as possible to help. I’ve seen other students get let go from sites due to their scanning skills unfortunately (at my extern site). Trust your training and knowledge and be confident in your scanning. As you enter your externship, learn skills from other seasoned sonographers, each one will have different tips and tricks to offer.

Take lecture seriously. The stronger your understating of anatomy, physiology, pathology, Sonographic appearance, etc, the easier it will be to pass your boards. My campus also has a verbal exit exam. It’s easy if you actually learned what you were supposed to for each quarter.
