I think the other part of it is that labels do not want to pay for marketing. They don’t even invest in artist development! They seek artists on the come up with some buzz and then try to piggyback off of that. The labels don’t even want to pay for videos anymore because they don’t count towards sales. A lot of this couldn’t happen today unless the artist foots the bill for themselves.
