The process starts before the vehicle ever leaves the aircraft. A small drogue parachute deploys first, creating enough drag to pull the load toward and out of the cargo ramp. Once clear of the aircraft, a series of larger parachutes opens to stabilize the vehicle and control its descent. Considering the weight involved, the landing is just as important as the drop itself.
