Honestly, I didn’t have much to invest for them when I first started, so I had to prioritize ONE thing I wanted to help them with. A big part of my own debt-free journey was paying off student loans. And as the first in my family to graduate from college, I’ve always been a big proponent of further education. So my one thing was EDUCATION. If I could only give them one financial head start, I wanted it to be the opportunity to pursue an education without student loans. That made my decision pretty easy. And one of the biggest changes to 529s in recent years made me like them even more: under certain requirements, up to $35K can now be rolled from a 529 into the beneficiary’s Roth IRA. That adds a layer of flexibility that wasn’t there when I first opened their accounts… while still allowing me, as the account owner, to maintain control of the funds. 😉 Is a 529 the “perfect” investing account for every kid?
